Recipe Directions

  • 1. Throw these raw chocolate avocado pudding ingredients into a high-speed blender. Start blending on slow and then crank up the blending speed to high.
  • 2. Blend this sucker until puddingy and gooooood! You might need to start and stop this a few times to get it to blend properly because the dates will require more blending than pudding recipes that don't contain dates. If you have a good blender (AKA Vitamix or Blendtec) then you should be able to get this super smooth.
  • 3. You may need to add a tiny bit of extra water to facilitate blending. But if doing so only add TINY bits at a time! Try not to add extra water or it'll end up watering it down and changing the consistency.

The Rawtarian's Thoughts

By The Rawtarian

Most raw chocolate avocado puddings do not contain dates. Rather, instead they include a lot more agave nectar or raw honey to get the pudding to sweeten up. However, I don't like to use too much honey in this one, so instead in this raw chocolate avocado pudding recipe I call for dates and just a bit of honey.

I recommend soaking your dates first in a warm water for an hour or so so that they are soft and easier to blend, especially If you do not have a high-speed blender.

Although you can eat this chocolate pudding right away, I find that this raw pudding tastes best when chilled in the fridge for at least a few hours.

This is a small recipe that makes four small servings. Feel free to double if you'd like more. And more choco puddding is always a good thing!

I just want to add that when making this “treat,” it’s very important that the avocado is ripe but not mushy or it will destroy the taste of the entire recipe no matter how much honey or sweeteners you’d add. So be careful!!!! And I really prefer to add, say, dried cranberries to this once it’s chilled, or raisins, I think it really fades out the avocado taste like nothing else. I’m hoping readers or members try it as I’ve suggested (like, I know what I’m talking about ?). I always read Laura-Jane’s Personal Thoughts on a recipe as well as the comments readers post, I find them entertaining (amusing) and very useful, some people provide great tips or things I didn’t think of esp. when new to raw “cooking.” I think most people are more concerned with taste than health and nutritional value before “going raw,” myself included... I had no idea what I was missing out on. This is definitely a sustainable lifestyle and the transition is not so difficult (all thanks to Laura-Jane’s genius creativity).

Sooo... I made this, and at the end I added in a few dried cranberries, mixed them in then topped it with unsweetened coconut flakes and a few fresh blueberries and chopped strawberries... if anyone's looking for me, I am in Raw Sweet Heaven (please, do not disturb!) ??

Yes, please do not disturb indeed. Sometimes I describe those moments as: "I am going to go into the closet and quietly eat this with a spoon now" moment. :)

Soooo hits the spot when you want to cheat! Oh yummy, yummy, yummy!!

Would soaking the dates in the water first help ease the blending of the dates? I have a vitamix and it was not perfectly smooth, not that I cared, tasted good any way about it. It might work better as a bigger batch in blending better. I did the 4 serving size.

I used raw cacao powder (which I'm told is more bitter & stronger flavored than processed cocoa) and therefore preferred double the amount of honey.

I would have never guessed this would keep 3 days! Yay!

Thank you for such fantastic recipes!

Making this for my type 2 diabetic husband..any ideas for replacement of the dates? I use stevia in most my recipes. Great site and recipe!

Hi Lynn,

Overall, stevia is indeed the best sweetener for diabetics.

This recipe won't work very well without the dates, since they affect the consistency of the pudding.

One slight modification that could work well is to use dried apricots instead of the dates (since they are less sweet than dates) and add some stevia to compensate for the sweetness. I'm not sure if he should be eating dried apricots, though.

If not, perhaps try one of my chia puddings instead - those are much easier to use stevia as the sweetener in.

Hope this helps!

just finished making the pudding. I used carob powder instead of cocoa powder. I was having a hard time pureeing everything in the vitamix so I moved the ingredients to a food processor and it woked great. the pudding is very good.

Hi Mumin!

Too bad about the almond milk - although I would have said go for it! I can't imagine that it would have been too much of an issue... perhaps you ate too much ;)

I suggest leaving the date amount as written, and simply omitting the honey (or greatly reducing it) instead of tweaking the amount of dates. It won't be QUITE as sweet, but it will turn out fine.
