Cashew alternative?

Hello everyone!

Im just curious is there an alternative to cashews in recipes?

Around here they are 6-8 dollars not even for a full pound, i cant bring myself to pay that.

Is there something i can use instead? I was really wanting to try cheesy kale chips because I have a dehydrator now, but all of the recipes i have seen use cashews. You input and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • My husband has developed an allergy to Cashews so I have substituted Pine Nuts with success, but they are even more expensive than Cashews. Don't know if there is a cheaper alternative that provides a similar texture. Good luck.

I either use Pine Nuts or Hemp Seed when substituting for cashews in a savory dish. When I sweeter recipe calls for cashews and I want to substitute it with something else I usually use either mac nuts or almonds (occasionally dried coconut).

Sunflower seeds would be a good sub for the kale chip recipe. When I've been low on cashews, I've used half nuts, half sunflower seeds and it worked great.

  • I'm allergic to cashews so I always sub young coconut meat for cashews and it works great, as long as it's kinda firm. Would probably work really well for kale chips

    Thanks for your suggestions guys!

Do you think I could make a cheezy kale chip with sunflower seeds? I know the macadamia nuts are what add the creaminess and cheezy like flavorings to alot of raw dishes, i just wish they werent so darn expensive.

Yeah, I think it would work fine with sunflower seeds, you may need to up the nutritional yeast a bit though.

I've made kale chips with sunflower seeds before. The flavor isn't as good in my opinion but it works just fine. Like Sv3 said you'll probably need to adjust the seasonings. Cashews have a "neutral" flavor but sunflower seeds add a different taste.

I know, cashews and macadamia nuts are expensive. I do use them, but I only use them for very special recipes.

For example, I will use cashews in my favourite creamy lemon cookies and in my awesome alfredo sauce. However, I definitely see these as a treat, and I ration their use.
