Raw sesame seed dessert recipe – Halvah

Posted by Laura-Jane On October - 18 - 2009

halvah As you can tell by now, I just love simple recipes with very few ingredients. You can’t get much simpler than this raw, sesame seed dessert recipe for halvah.

It’s right up there with my raw chocolate shake recipe for easy, fast raw desserts.

To give you some background, halvah is a dense, sweet confection common in the Middle East. Halvah is usually crumbly and made from sesame seeds or other nuts.

This recipe requires a coffee grinder or nut grinder! Do not attempt unless you’ve got one! You should have a coffee grinder that is dedicated to seeds/nuts only. They’re inexpensive. Find one at your local hardware or big box store for $20.

This is a very small portion, suitable for a midnight snack for one person, although you can’t really make it at midnight ’cause that coffee grinder will wake the whole household!

  • Two tablespoons of sesame seeds
  • 1 teaspoon agave nectar

In a coffee grinder, grind the seeds until they look like flour. Don’t overgrind them or they’ll be hard to get out of the coffee/nut grinder because they’ll get pasty.

Place the ground sesame seeds in a tiny bowl. Add the agave nectar and mix with a spoon. until the recipe clings together. Your goal is to make it look like cookie dough.

Eat with a spoon, roll into balls, or form into a little bar. Adjust measurements to taste.

Obviously, if you want to make a big batch as pictured in the photo, just grind up LOTS of sesame seeds and then add enough agave to replicate the texture from your tiny batch.

Delicious tip: After grinding but before adding the agave, add some other interesting ingredients, like a pinch of poppyseeds or some lemon peel or cinnamon. Make a simple batch first and then get creative with this sesame seed halvah recipe! The pictured halvah has pistachio nuts added in. Yummy!

That Halva…. is the recipe I’ve been longing for ever since I tasted non-raw Halva a few years ago…! And now I have motivation to get the ONE appliance missing from my nearly-perfect Raw Kitchen… a coffee grinder. :D

  2. I just made a batch with a little sea salt and cinnamon and it is very delicious! Thank you!
